About the Event
Find out how much sodium is in your sweat and receive a tailored hydration and fuelling plan to avoid cramp, maximise energy and perform at your best.
Everyone loses a different amount of sodium in their sweat. Within Bristol Trail Runners alone, we have tested runners who lose around 400mg of sodium per litre of sweat, and runners who lose around 1800mg of sodium per litre of sweat. I (Joe Wenman) lose 1180mg of sodium per litre of sweat, making Precision Hydrations solution essential for me to perform at my best.
Most sodium/sports drinks contain about 200-400mg/l. This is not a strong enough sodium concentration for most people. Precision Hydration have developed different strengths of sodium drinks so you can replenish your sodium losses and perform at your best.
Becoming defficient in sodium during a training session or race can cause a variety of negative effects. These effects can be detrimental to your performance. Your blood volume is greatly reduced as your sweat losses increase. That’s because sweat is drawn from your blood plasma. This increases the strain on your cardiovascular system, making it harder to pump blood to your skin to cool you down and to your working muscles.
Other issues such as a general feeling of fatigue and muscle cramps can also be experienced if losses are allowed to go uncorrected for long enough, or if significant imbalances between fluid and sodium are allowed to occur.
Up to a certain point, taking in plain water is enough to mitigate sweat losses. But, as those losses start to mount up, you need to replace sodium too in order to avoid your blood becoming diluted. This is a potentially disastrous condition called hyponatremia, which can certainly ruin your race and, tragically, has even been fatal on occasion.
What Do I Get At An Appointment?
- Your test will be carried out by BTR founding member and running coach, Joe Wenman
- The test is completed at rest using electrodes to induce sweating on a small patch of your arm. This sweat is then tested for sodium concentration.
- Once the test is complete, we will provide you with a bespoke hydration plan, recommending how much of what strength you should consume before, during and after a training session or race. The strategy is often different for training and racing.
- Once you have received your strategy, you will have 15 minutes or so spare to discuss fuelling and hydration with Joe, and will receive continued support from Precision Hydration via phone call if required.
